On June 19, 2018, the USPTO issued patent number 10 million. Historically, the ‘millionth’ patent has always celebrated the rich history and strength of the American intellectual property system, since the first U.S patent issued in 1790.
Symbolizing the breadth of American invention, patent 10 million is for a laser detection and ranging (LADAR) system, “Coherent Ladar Using Intra-Pixel Quadrature Detection”, and has applications in such varied fields as autonomous vehicles, medical imaging devices, military defense systems, and space and undersea exploration. It was invented by Joseph Marron and is owned by Raytheon Company.
